Vegas Golden Knights continue cap-dump by trading Pacioretty to Carolina

The Vegas Golden Knights started another summer of cap-clearing by trading star winger Max Pacioretty to the Carolina Hurricanes.

Defenceman Dylan Coghlan is also heading east to the Canes, with Vegas receiving future considerations in return.

Pacioretty has been a revelation for the Vegas Golden Knights since arriving four years ago in a trade with the Montreal Canadiens.

However, he struggled to get onto the ice in an injury-hit 2021-22 season, so Vegas have taken the chance to clear his $7million per year salary hit.

“Adding offensive firepower and improving our power play were priorities this offseason, and Max certainly checks those boxes,” Carolina general manager Don Waddell said. “This acquisition gives us an elite scorer and another veteran voice in our dressing room.

“Dylan is a young, right-shot defenseman who fits our system well. We like his ability to take away time and space and play fast defensively.”

Vegas Golden Knights were $2million over the cap and needed to extend Reilly Smith, which they did with a $5million three-year deal.

That left no room for Pacioretty, while Carolina get a player who could help them mount a Stanley Cup challenge in the hear and how while Vegas focus on a rebuild.
